Ebola - Oct 17, 2014

With the Ebola epidemic in West Africa touching close to home, it's important for the public to be well informed about the disease.

Here are some facts:

  • Ebola Virus Disease is a severe, often fatal illness
  • The virus is transmitted to humans from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human to human contact
  • Average fatality rate is 50% although fatality rates have varied from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks
  • There is no cure or vaccine for the disease at this time.  Like most viral diseases early aggressive supportive care with rehydration and symptom control is cornerstone of treatment.
  • The current outbreak in west Africa is the largest and most complex since the Ebola virus was discovered in 1976.  Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia are the epicenter of the outbreak.  Approximately 8900 people have been infected and 4500 have died.
